Hello Everyone. My name is Shaun, Im 28, I live in Rialto. I drive a 2004 Saturn Ion Redline thats been converted from m62 supercharger to a S20g turbo system. My Roomate just recently picked up my old 1970 VW bug. I had to give up mostly because I didnt have anymore time or resources to put in it. I picked it up fairly abused, And no more than 200 miles later, The generator and engine completely gave out. So there It sat and waited until my Roomate came along.
He currently is picking up a new motor/Alternator conversion/Floorpans and probably some more small goodies.
The interior has been cleaned up to the best of our ability. We dont weld otherwise we wouldve chopped those rusted floor pans out ourselves. So far the motor is next on our list, the company we are picking it up from in montclair are telling us that we will have to wait an extra week for a long block. So in the meantime we got started on the small piddly things. Disconnected Fuel line, throttle cable, coil wires and generator wiring and moved everything aside for the time being. With the motor out I plan to do some rewiring in the bay. The previous owner found it amusing to have several wires either lead to nowhere, or use spare wire as some sort of ziptie system, lol.
We came to the site hoping to find a nice local VW community, and possibly some advice/assistance.
Were undertaking the majority of the project ourselves. Were pretty mechanically inclined, but I am more of a new age tuner. I computer tune cars using programs like HPtuners, and ECU tec. So the though of myself playing around with a distributor cap, or the carb is pretty unsettling. If anyone Can offer some assistance or advice, or even a hug in the matter that would be the world to us. In the meantime, Id just like to say thank you for listening, and I'll cya guys on the forums.

Here is a few pics of the car during the build:

Well tonight me and my roommate yanked out the old 1600 and what a mess it is on all over the engine and beyond.
The trans/engine mounts were saturated with oil, made them really squishy and crumbly. so well be replacing those as well. The rest of the motor had oil from lord knows where. So Sunday well be undertaking disassembly of the motor to get it down to the long block, I'll probably start to rewire the back off of the motor with whatever spare time is left.
I do have a question though regarding the engine tin.
As in how many pieces are there? We know about the doghouse, and the tin on top of the heads/valve covers. There was a tin somewhat on the rear of the motor, But it was held on by nothing, and cracked so we will more than likely need a new one. Common sense tells me there should be one up front as well, to keep the heat from coming up into the engine bay. I may be wrong, but my gut is telling me otherwise. Any idea where we can pick one up?
Sorry, no pics tonight/this morning. Ill try to throw some up in the afternoon.

you are right about the front and rear engine tin, you can pick those up at any vw store like car craft or the place in lake elsinore, or save a bug in riverside. they are fairly cheap and are held on by screws on the cylinder tin. if you need some help with it e mail me or call Ill help ya. Johnny

Thanks for the heads up. I knew something looked empty up front.

So small update, My roomate and I stripped the motor down to the long block. Wasnt a great feat, Most everything was a 10 or a 13. some small hard to reach bolts, but nothing remotely bad. Everything came off without a hitch. Took a few notes regarding the coil and the distributor. The only thing that remains is the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel and the crank pulley.
On a side note though, there is alot of oil build up at the top of the motor. Seems it may be coming from under the generator stand/oil fill. When we uninstalled it though, we found the gasket in tact. Strange. Anyone have any ideas?

The sad fact is that is probably leaking from there, nuts come loose ,the crankcase pressure relief hose could be leaking..it could be a couple of things, but fixable.
