So I seem to be getting conflicting information on the grade of oil I should use. I have a 1915cc and a remote spin on filter. The guy that taught me how to do an oil changes on a VW said I should use 10/30. Before him I was told straight 30 then I read Straight 40 for hot claimants. Then I read 20/50 and 25/60. And what’s this about additives???? Ahhh help! I wanna make sure i'm not using something that’s completely bad or wrong for my baby.

Thank you!!!

20W50 no additives but just use one quart of synthetic (for the cleaning agents) and the rest in mineral

Thanks Seb!!
If it does not say Synthetic is it mineral?
I looked online and some will say Synthetic others say neither Synthetic or mineral.

yes when there is nothing on it it is usually mineral, just buy two quarts of synthetics and a gallon of mineral, like you will have one oil change in advance. I know a bunch of people like the Castrol brand, usually the better prices are in WalMart. Try to change the copper seal on the drain plug too, better if you can have a complet kit with new seals, oil filter..., if you also have an external oil filter change it too.

Ok so I went to get 20/50 oil and a bottle of Synthetic. I could not find 20/50 synthetic so I asked for help. When I told the guy my plan of mixing the two you should have seen his face. You would have thought I said I was putting suger in the gas tank. He said that they did not carry 20/50 synthetic and in his 25 years in auto parts everything he ever heard said never to mix the two. Well needless to say I didnt buy synthetic oil.
but:
1.was this guy wrong (being as we are dealing with a old VW)
2. should I buy the same grade of synthetic oil as mineral? or is another grade ok.
3. if not where the hell can i find 20/50 synthetic?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Gee they are so conformism.... If you cannot find it just put 2.5 qt of mineral oil without additive and one quart of mineral with additive
Do you have an oil sump ?

another good oil to use since its cold 10/40 shell rotella it has zinc in it. one thing to remeber about oil is the higher the weight the thicker the oil and it can cause problems with starting in the mornings.
